Chiefs Rehire Eric Bieniemy as Offensive Coordinator
The Kansas City Chiefs have rehired Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator in hopes of revitalizing their offense after a disappointing 2025 season.
The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back Eric Bieniemy to run their offense after a disastrous 2025 season that saw the team miss the playoffs for the first time with Patrick Mahomes under center.
Bieniemy, who spent last season as the Chicago Bears' running backs coach, returns to the role he held for five seasons (2018-22). NFL Media reported the move Wednesday.
He replaces Matt Nagy, whose contract expired this offseason. Nagy has fielded head coaching and offensive coordinator interest elsewhere, interviewing with the Philadelphia Eagles about their coordinator vacancy on Wednesday.
A Desperate Rebuild
The Chiefs stumbled to a 6-8 record before Mahomes suffered an ACL tear that ended his season. The quarterback has pledged to return by Week 1.
Their offense crumbled this year, ranking 20th in yards and 21st in points—a sharp decline from the Nagy era. Mahomes' individual statistics have also dipped significantly from his dominant first five years in the league.
Bieniemy's Proven Track Record
Bieniemy's first stint as coordinator overlapped with one of the best five-year stretches for any quarterback in NFL history. During his five seasons:
- Mahomes won two MVP awards
- The Chiefs won two Super Bowls
Bieniemy left after the 2022 Super Bowl victory to become the Washington Commanders' offensive coordinator, seeking the authority to call plays. He later served as UCLA's running backs coach in 2024.
Kansas City is betting its mercurial quarterback can recapture that form with the architect of his greatest success back in charge.
