Lions' Defense Collapses in Packers Loss; Bears Surge to Top of NFC North
The Detroit Lions fell to third place in the NFC North after a 31-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers, while the Chicago Bears capitalized on their opportunity to take the division lead with a commanding victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Detroit Lions surrendered their grip on the NFC North after a defensive breakdown in Thursday's 31-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers, allowing the Chicago Bears to seize first place with a dominant win over the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles.
The Packers dismantled Detroit's protection scheme, recording seven quarterback hits, three sacks, and seven hurries on Jared Goff. The offensive line failures proved catastrophic for a team that prides itself on running the football and controlling the line of scrimmage.
"The Detroit Lions may have lost their toughness," Julian Edelman said on FOX NFL Sunday. "How are you a tough football team? You can run the football, you can stop the run [and] you can protect the quarterback. Seven quarterback hits, three sacks on Jared Goff [and] seven hurries. They couldn't protect him. Jared Goff needs to have that middle of the pocket."
Despite Goff reaching 3,000 passing yards for the ninth time in his career, the Lions couldn't overcome Green Bay's dominant performance. The Packers outgained Detroit in both passing and rushing yards while recording eight tackles for loss. Detroit managed no sacks and just one tackle for loss.
NFC North Standings Shift
The loss drops Detroit to 7-5, third in the division behind the Packers at 8-3-1 and the surging Bears at 9-3.
Chicago's Black Friday victory over Philadelphia was methodical and suffocating. The Bears controlled possession for 39 minutes 18 seconds compared to the Eagles' 20:42, completed 85 offensive plays to Philadelphia's 51, and dominated in the ground game with 281 rushing yards to the Eagles' 87.
Quarterback Caleb Williams delivered when it mattered mostโconverting a crucial third-and-8 with his legs and finding Cole Kmet on a backside post route in difficult windy conditions.
"I'm buying the Bears," Edelman said. "They've been able to run the ball down people's throats. ... They had long, methodical drives [against the Eagles]. Look at Caleb Williams. ... He had two plays that stood out to me โ that third-and-8 where he doubled back and he made the first down with his legs, and then the touchdown to Cole Kmet when he's rolling to his left [and] hits that backside post to Kmet in a windy, hard-condition day to throw the ball. That's all you need."
Vikings Remain Cellar Dwellers
The Minnesota Vikings at 4-7 are the only NFC North team still playing in Week 13, facing the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET on FOX. Minnesota is on a three-game losing streak with just one win in its last six games.
