NFL Awards 2030 Super Bowl to Nashville, First Championship Game in Music City
The NFL has awarded Super Bowl LIV to Nashville, selecting the Tennessee Titans' new Nissan Stadium to host the championship game for the first time in 2030.
The NFL awarded Super Bowl LIV to Nashville on Tuesday, selecting the Tennessee Titans' new Nissan Stadium to host the league's championship game for the first time. Team owners voted to bring the event to the Music City in 2030.
The decision came after the Titans' $2.1 billion enclosed stadium project impressed league executives. Construction is on schedule to finish in February, completing a three-year build directly across from the current Nissan Stadium. The 2030 date gives the Titans three full seasons to prepare before hosting the championship.
What Changed Nashville's Prospects
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell signaled in November that Nashville had everything needed except the venue itself. The turning point came during the 2019 NFL Draft, when the city set a record with attendance that demonstrated its capacity to handle major league events.
"That for us changed the future of the draft, arguably changed the future of the Titans and the community. And I think this is the next great step in a remarkable football journey and a great community in Nashville. We can't wait to be there." β Roger Goodell
The 2019 draft showcased Nashville's unique appeal: live bands performed between picks, headliners like Tim McGraw capped nightly events, and fans packed the Lower Broad honky-tonk district. The proximity to the current Titans stadium via pedestrian bridge created an integrated entertainment experience that impressed league decision-makers.
Nashville's Advantages
The city holds clear logistical advantages for hosting. Only New Orleans and Las Vegas have more hotel rooms within a one-mile radius of an NFL stadium. Nashville's market is projected to have 658 hotels with over 80,000 rooms by 2030, compared to the current 61,000 available.
Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said the organization is prepared to deliver.
"We cannot wait for our community to experience an event of this magnitude and for the world to see the energy, hospitality, and culture that make our city so special on a global stage. We look forward to bringing an unforgettable Super Bowl experience to Nashville together." β Amy Adams Strunk
Financing the Stadium
The new stadium received $1.2 billion in public funding, considered the largest public commitment for an NFL stadium when approved in 2022. Nashville's sports authority issued $760 million in bonds, with an additional $500 million in state bonds backing the project.
The Super Bowl Pipeline
Nashville joins a crowded Super Bowl schedule. The NFL's lineup includes SoFi Stadium in Inglewood for 2027, Atlanta in 2028, and Las Vegas in 2029.
The league also announced Tuesday that Minnesota will host the 2028 draftβa decade after hosting the 2018 Super Bowl. Pittsburgh drew a record 805,000 fans during the April draft. Washington will host the 2027 draft.
Looking Beyond the Super Bowl
Nashville is already planning additional major events at the new stadium. Former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, who controls the NHL's Nashville Predators, chairs the Music City Major Events group assembled in 2023 to attract other high-profile competitions to the venue.
