Philip Rivers, who returned from a five-year retirement to start three games at quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts this season, is interviewing with the Buffalo Bills for their head-coaching vacancy on Friday, according to ESPN.

The Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott on Monday after nine seasons, following the team's AFC divisional round loss to the Denver Broncos. Buffalo finished the regular season 12-5.

Rivers' Coaching Ambitions

Rivers has never held an NFL coaching position but has served as head coach of St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama since 2021. Multiple NFL teams expressed interest earlier this month in interviewing the veteran quarterback for their vacant head-coaching roles.

Other Candidates in the Mix

Buffalo has already interviewed several candidates:

  • Joe Brady, current offensive coordinator
  • Brian Daboll, former Bills offensive coordinator and New York Giants head coach
  • Lou Anarumo, Colts defensive coordinator

Additional interviews are expected with:

  • Anthony Weaver, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator
  • Anthony Lynn, Washington Commanders running backs coach and former Los Angeles Chargers head coach
  • Grant Udinski, Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator

Notably, Josh Allen, the Bills' superstar quarterback, has attended the head-coaching interviews, according to The Athletic.

The Broader Coaching Carousel

Five NFL teams are currently seeking new head coaches: the Bills, Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rivers' Playing Resume

An eight-time Pro Bowler, Rivers spent 16 seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers (2004-19) before a one-year stint with Indianapolis in 2020. He returned to the Colts in 2025 after starter Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending torn right Achilles tendon. Rivers ranks sixth in NFL history with 425 passing touchdowns and eighth with 63,984 passing yards.
