The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to hire Mike McCarthy, former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, as their new head coach following Mike Tomlin's resignation.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are planning to hire former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy as their new head coach, according to ESPN.

McCarthy replaces Mike Tomlin, who stepped down in January after 19 years at the helm. Tomlin led the Steelers to a Super Bowl victory in 2009 and never posted a losing season during his tenure. Pittsburgh finished 10-7 in the 2025-26 season.

A Pennsylvania native, McCarthy becomes only the fourth Steelers head coach since 1969. He arrives after five years with the Cowboys.

McCarthy's Cowboys Track Record

McCarthy compiled a 49-35 regular-season record in Dallas, including three consecutive 12-win seasons and two NFC East titles. However, his postseason success was limitedβ€”he went 1-3 in the playoffs, with his last appearance in 2023. His contract expired in January, and both sides parted ways.

Prior Success with Green Bay

Before joining Dallas, McCarthy spent 13 years as the Green Bay Packers' head coach and led them to a Super Bowl victory in 2011, defeating his hometown Steelers 31-25.
