The Night Tom Brady Got Snowed In and Out-Chugged His Offensive Line
After a dominating win over the Bills, a snowstorm led the New England Patriots to gather at a Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Rochester, where Tom Brady showcased his beer-chugging skills.
The New England Patriots demolished the Buffalo Bills 34-3 the day after Christmas 2010, dominating a blowout on the frozen turf of Orchard Park. Tom Brady threw for 140 yards with three touchdown passes—two to Rob Gronkowski—while the Patriots ground game churned out 217 yards. BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 104 yards on 19 carries. Danny Woodhead added 93 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.
What happened after the final whistle became Patriots lore.
Heavy snow blanketed the region immediately after the game, so severe that the team couldn't fly home that night. Five busloads of Patriots headed toward the airport, then pivoted sharply north toward Rochester, New York.
"We got five busloads of people on the buses, headed to the airport," Brady said. "What we're going to do, we're going to detour to Rochester, New York. Not only do we detour, we head that way. I don't remember how long the drive was, at least over an hour, maybe two. And when we got there, everyone was like, 'Hey, we're all snowed in. We can't get home. What should we do for the night?' Well, there happens to be a Dinosaur Bar-B-Que."
The legendary Western New York barbecue joint became the Patriots' unlikely gathering spot that evening. The menu was straightforward: pitchers of beer and chicken wings.
"So, we had the whole offensive group together, the defensive group together. We had everybody having the time of their life at the Dinosaur Barbecue celebrating a great win over the Bills," Brady said.
What unfolded that night spawned endless internet stories about Brady's beer-chugging ability. The quarterback went head-to-head with some of his offensive linemen in competitive drinking, and while he didn't win every round, he held his own.
"I didn't drink any out of a shoe. That's a rumor, OK? I won a lot. I lost a few, but I think I gained the respect of all my offensive linemen, going toe to toe, head to head with some of the best beer chuggers on the planet," Brady said.
Former Patriots offensive lineman Ross Tucker vouched for Brady's dominance years later in 2014.
"I still have never seen anybody chug a beer faster than Tom Brady. You should've seen the way he slammed down his cup — it was like he was spiking the ball after a TD. It was hilarious. It was awesome. It was textbook Brady."
The victory improved New England to 13-2, and Brady viewed the forced detour as a blessing in disguise late in the season.
"They say there's a saying, 'Make lemonade out of lemons.' That's what we did that night," he said.
The season ended in disappointment when the top-seeded Patriots lost to an upstart New York Jets team in the Divisional Round—a result Brady preferred not to revisit.
"I don't want to talk about how that season ended, but that was a great moment of our trip to Buffalo," Brady said.
