Two Early NFL Bets to Watch: Cowboys and Chiefs Favored in Week 1
The Cowboys and Chiefs are favored to win their Week 1 matchups against the Giants and Broncos, respectively, with improved rosters and strategic advantages.
The NFL schedule is out. Now it's time to place some wagers.
Cowboys @ Giants
Sept. 13 — Week 1
Dallas is the play here.
Dak Prescott remains underrated despite consistent strong performance. The Cowboys possess an elite offensive line and world-class receiving corps—their offense is firing on all cylinders. Defense was a liability last season, but Dallas has addressed it aggressively through late-season moves and free agency.
The improvements are across the board: Malachi Lawrence and Caleb Downs in the draft, plus Rashan Gary and Cobie Durant in free agency.
New York made moves too. John Harbaugh arrives as head coach. The Giants drafted Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa. Quarterback Jaxson Dart and star receiver Malik Nabers are expected healthy. The defense figures to be formidable again with a relentless pass rush.
But here's the problem for New York: MetLife Stadium provides virtually no home-field advantage. Historical data confirms the Giants don't cover at home as often—a pattern that extends beyond their recent struggles.
The Cowboys own the field advantage this matchup. They've retained their coaching staff around a superior quarterback. Dallas's revamped offensive line should neutralize New York's defensive front. The Cowboys' improved defense should exploit a Giants offense adjusting to new coaching staff in Week 1.
PICK: Cowboys (-2.5)
Broncos @ Chiefs
Sept. 14 — Week 1
Kansas City gets the nod.
Last season was brutal. The Chiefs offense lacked rhythm and design. Injuries compounded the problem—receivers, offensive line, and eventually Patrick Mahomes himself.
Mahomes is healthy now. The offensive line is healthy. Kansas City added Kenneth Walker at running back and has overhauled offensive philosophy. The defense underperformed relative to its talent; fresh young defensive pieces could change that trajectory immediately.
Denver reached the AFC Championship Game in Sean Payton's second year with Bo Nix. The Broncos exited when Nix was sidelined. He's expected to start Week 1.
Denver's roster needed minimal tinkering. Elite offensive line intact. Jaylen Waddle bolsters receiving weapons. The defense—already outstanding—returns virtually intact. This team looks positioned for another deep playoff run.
But Andy Reid's teams are lethal in Week 1, and the Chiefs will be motivated. All offseason, narratives of decline have circulated. Kansas City's roster is demonstrably improved. They've upgraded the coaching staff.
The Broncos will compete for the AFC West title, but they'll drop their opener.
PICK: Chiefs (-2.5)
