Two NFL Single-Season Records Under Siege Before Thanksgiving

Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Myles Garrett are on the brink of breaking NFL single-season records for receiving yards and sacks, respectively, highlighting a potentially historic season.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba is on the verge of making history. The Seattle Seahawks receiver has already shattered the franchise receiving record and is tracking to become the first player in NFL history to surpass 2,000 receiving yards in a single season.

Meanwhile, Myles Garrett is closing in on the all-time sacks record with ruthless efficiency, having accumulated 13 sacks in just the last four games.

The calendar hasn't even reached Thanksgiving, and two of professional football's most significant single-season records hang in the balance.

Smith-Njigba's Historic Run

Smith-Njigba torched Tennessee for 167 yards receiving on Sunday, pushing his season total to 1,313 yards through 11 games. He's already obliterated D.K. Metcalf's franchise record of 1,303 yards set in 2020.

His current production ranks third among all players in their team's first 11 games of a season. Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch holds the record with 1,349 yards in 1951, followed by Charley Hennigan's 1,327 in 1961 and Tyreek Hill's 1,324 in 2023.

Smith-Njigba is averaging 119.4 yards per game—just shy of Calvin Johnson's 122.8 average in 2012 when he set the single-season receiving record with 1,964 yards. With the NFL's 17-game schedule, Smith-Njigba is on pace to reach approximately 2,030 yards, shattering Johnson's mark.

He's accomplishing this feat on a team that runs more than half its offensive plays, making his production even more striking. Smith-Njigba has accounted for 46.9% of Seattle's receiving yards—the fourth-highest share since 1948. The last player to claim a higher percentage was Ken Burroughs, who had 50.6% for the Houston Oilers half a century ago.

Garrett's Sack Surge

Garrett has registered 18 sacks through 11 games, the most by any player at this stage of a season. He surpassed Mark Gastineau's previous record of 17.5 sacks set in 1984, when Gastineau finished with 22.

The current single-season record stands at 22.5 sacks, jointly held by Michael Strahan (2001) and T.J. Watt (2020).

Garrett needs just five sacks in his final six games to break the record. He's been relentless, posting at least three sacks in three of his last four games. Most recently, he sacked Geno Smith three times in Cleveland's win over Las Vegas on Sunday.

Only Lawrence Taylor has matched Garrett's output—Taylor recorded four three-sack games in 1987, the season he won AP NFL MVP with the New York Giants.

The Asterisk: White's 1987 Season

One record looms larger than Strahan and Watt's mark. Reggie White compiled 19 sacks in his first 11 games during the strike-impacted 1987 season, when teams played just 15 games. White ultimately finished with 21 sacks in 12 games.

Garrett still trails White's pace, but with six games remaining, the possibility remains very real.
