NFL Draft Needs: AFC Teams Face Critical Roster Gaps Heading Into Selection Season

As teams prepare for the draft, every AFC franchise aims to address significant roster gaps, with positional needs ranging from edge rusher to wide receiver.

Free agency revealed winners and losers across the league, but the work is far from finished. As teams head into the draft, every AFC franchise still has significant holes to fill—some more urgent than others.

AFC East

Buffalo Bills: Edge rusher

The Bills tied for 20th in the NFL in sacks last season. While they signed former Pro Bowl linebacker Bradley Chubb in free agency, the 30-year-old is hardly a long-term solution. Edge rusher Joey Bosa remains an unrestricted free agent, leaving Buffalo without a proven pass-rush presence.

Ideal fit: Illinois EDGE Gabe Jacas (draft)

Miami Dolphins: Wide receiver

The Dolphins gutted their receiving corps by trading Jaylen Waddle to Denver. What remains is arguably the NFL's worst receiver room. Top options are free-agent acquisitions Tutu Atwell and Jalen Tolbert—neither has eclipsed 610 receiving yards in a single season.

Ideal fit: Arizona State WR Jordyn Tyson (draft)

New York Jets: Wide receiver

The Jets are desperate for a No. 2 receiver. Star wideout Garrett Wilson missed 10 games last season with a right knee injury and still led New York with just 395 receiving yards. The supporting cast is dangerously thin.

Ideal fit: Washington WR Denzel Boston (draft)

New England Patriots: Offensive tackle

The reigning AFC champions absorbed a beating in the playoffs and Super Bowl. Quarterback Drake Maye took hits he shouldn't have. Right tackle Morgan Moses turned 35 this month, and while left tackle Will Campbell could develop, New England must think long-term at the position.

Ideal fit: Clemson OT Blake Miller (draft)

AFC North

Baltimore Ravens: Center

Tyler Linderbaum's departure to Las Vegas in free agency left a gaping hole at center. The Ravens can address this in the second or third round.

Ideal fit: Auburn C Connor Lew (draft)

Cincinnati Bengals: Cornerback

Both starting cornerbacks—Dax Hill and DJ Turner II—enter contract years. Cincinnati cannot afford to pay both in 2027, forcing the team to think long-term at the position.

Ideal fit: LSU CB Mansoor Delane (draft)

Cleveland Browns: Wide receiver

Despite a free agency overhaul of the offensive line, wide receiver is the more pressing need. Jerry Jeudy was Cleveland's leading receiver last season with just 602 yards. The Browns didn't sign a free agent at the position.

Ideal fit: Ohio State WR Carnell Tate (draft)

Pittsburgh Steelers: Quarterback

The Steelers remain in limbo. Aaron Rodgers has yet to make a decision on his return. Pittsburgh has only veteran Mason Rudolph and second-year pro Will Howard under contract at quarterback.

Ideal fit: Aaron Rodgers (free agency)

AFC South

Houston Texans: Offensive line

Trading Tytus Howard meant losing their best and most versatile offensive lineman. While free-agent acquisition Braden Smith fills the right tackle hole, depth concerns have intensified across the rest of the line.

Ideal fit: Oregon G Emmanuel Pregnon (draft)

Indianapolis Colts: Edge rusher

The Colts need a proven pass-rusher opposite 2024 first-round pick Laiatu Latu. Free-agent signings Arden Key and Micheal Clemons are rotational pieces at best. Veterans Kwity Paye and Samson Ebukam left for the Raiders and Falcons.

Ideal fit: Oklahoma EDGE R Mason Thomas (draft)

Jacksonville Jaguars: Defensive tackle

After minimal free agency activity, the Jaguars need interior pass-rush production. Jacksonville registered just 32 sacks last season (27th in the league) and must generate pressure up the middle to complement edge defenders Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker.

Ideal fit: Oklahoma DT Gracen Halton (draft)

Tennessee Titans: Interior offensive line

The Titans released starting center Lloyd Cushenberry and signed Austin Schlottmann, a seven-year veteran who has never started more than four games in a season. Right guard is also uncertain with 2025 starter Kevin Zeitler a free agent.

Ideal fit: Iowa C Logan Jones (draft)

AFC West

Denver Broncos: Tight end

The Broncos traded for receiver Jaylen Waddle but added no other external free agents. Tight end remains a massive question mark—Denver managed just three touchdowns from the position in 2025.

Ideal fit: Oregon TE Kenyon Sadiq (draft)

Kansas City Chiefs: Defensive end

While cornerback is a valid argument after losing Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, Kansas City needs another starting edge rusher alongside George Karlaftis. The Chiefs also need pressure on 31-year-old tackle Chris Jones. No player registered more than seven sacks last season.

Ideal fit: Vikings DL Jonathan Greenard (trade)

Las Vegas Raiders: Wide receiver

The Raiders have elite tight end Brock Bowers, but presumptive No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza needs a WR1—or a player who can grow into one. The addition of former Vikings WR Jalen Nailor shouldn't prevent Las Vegas from targeting a wide receiver as high as the second round.

Ideal fit: Tennessee WR Chris Brazzell (draft)

Los Angeles Chargers: Guard

Protection for Justin Herbert is always paramount. Both starting guards from last season—Mekhi Becton and Zion Johnson—left in free agency. Los Angeles signed former Patriots first-rounder Cole Strange and brought back Trevor Penning, but at least one starting guard spot remains open.

Ideal fit: Penn State G Olaivavega Ioane (draft)
