USA Football Dominates NFL Stars to Win Inaugural Flag Football Championship

USA Football's specialized athletes dominated NFL stars to win the Fanatics Flag Football Championship, highlighting the distinct skills required for the sport ahead of the 2028 Olympics.

USA Football's specialized athletes decisively outmatched a roster of NFL elite on Saturday at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, capturing the inaugural Fanatics Flag Football Championship and cementing their dominance in the sport ahead of the 2028 Olympics.

USA Football finished 3-0 in round-robin play, routinely slicing past their NFL counterparts with the cat-quick agility and field vision the smaller game demands. The victory sent an unmistakable message: flag football is a fundamentally different discipline from the tackle version played on Sundays.

"Those guys that we competed against, they didn't know what they were getting themselves into," USA Football player Darrell Doucette said, his eyes welling with emotion after the win. "I think we gained a lot of respect from those guys."

Tom Brady Can Still Sling Itβ€”But Not Enough

Tom Brady's hand-picked team opened impressively. On the opening drive, the seven-time Super Bowl champion evaded a would-be flag rusher and delivered a dart to Stefon Diggs in the end zone, then connected with tight end Rob Gronkowski for a two-point conversion. Brady finished 8-of-12 for 61 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

It barely mattered. USA Football methodically tied the game and never looked back.

Brady acknowledged the gap, but offered a significant caveat: NFL-caliber athletes have two years to master flag football before Olympic selection begins.

"There's going to be a selection process, and may the best people play. That's the best thing about team sports, it's a meritocracy," Brady said. "But I think it's just good for NFL players to see what this is all about. We were literally learning how to take flags off two days ago."

The Field Advantage: Size Doesn't Matter Anymore

The smaller field exposed a hard truth: NFL athleticism translates poorly to flag football. A 40-yard dash is nearly useless when the entire field spans barely 50 yards. Deep balls evaporate. Bulk becomes a liability.

Doucette articulated the fundamental difference: "A 40 doesn't matter. It's all about being able to be a little twitchy or quicker."

USA Football's head coach Jorge Cascudo was impressed by Odell Beckham Jr., who made several spectacular catches, including a one-handed grab over two defenders. Cascudo extended an informal invitation.

"Odell's a great athlete. He made an excellent catch in our game, and I was like, 'Whoa. There's a spot whenever you're interested. Come talk to me. We'll put you in trials and come compete.'"

Size Won't Save You

Hall of Famer Luke Kuechly understood immediately why NFL linemen and linebackers struggled: the game is built for speed and precision, not power.

"Me and Logan (Paul), were not built for this type of game. I think when you look at it, you build it with corners and nickels on the defensive side of the ball. And then fast, skilled guys on the other side of the ball."

The takeaway is clear: the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will belong to flag football specialists, not NFL castoffs trying to learn a new game in two years.
